3 minutes is NOTHING on a steep mountain stage. Anyone can crack and loose huge time. The thing is, most of the best contenders are on same team. Perhaps if someone else on the same team has a good day (Kloden, Leipheimer, etc), then the team would work for that person. However, any outsider would just have superstar after superstar taking turns, pulling their team leader along and taking all the starch out of the interlopers. Armstrong and Bruneel were masters of using the team like this in Lance’s run.
So, an challenger from within? Yes. Outside that team? Doubt it.
