The Eiffel Tower $8.68 When it opened in 1889, just a few months before the Exposition Universelle for which it was commissioned, Parisians-from Dumas to de Maupassant-were appalled by the “useless and monstrous” tower Gustave Eiffel had planted in the heart of their beloved city. That enmity, however, was short-lived, and today the Eiffel Tower stands magnificently as one of our most beloved architectural landmarks, a … |

Today is the first day of the Tour de France, the greatest race in the world….?
…Will you be watching?
I’m a complete addict. I will probably not be beside the road this year (the first time in seven years) as the nearest Stage is high in the mountains and I’m not walking well. But watching – French and British telly – yes!
Just watching the guided tour of France, seeing the different landscapes is lovely, even before thinking about the competitive aspects.
After all the doping scandals and resultant banishing of riders, and even teams, there should be an interesting race – how many can still make it without mother’s little helper?
Amongst the Anglo-Saxon contingent, there’s George Hincapie and the probable favourite, Cadel Evans.
I agree that the scenery is gorgeous, and I think it is a wonderful competition. However, over the years I have been very saddened by the use of steroids and testosterone enhancers by the competitors. So, I will also be watching the news about those who still want to cheat to win such an honorable prize. I really hope that this year the major contenders are honest and travelling on their own steam. And, if they are, the race will not only be beautiful, but also give a real sense of how long this gruelling competition takes when the contenders are honest.
I’m so glad you asked the question, for I didn’t realize it starts today, and now I will certainly have my eye on it – especially today and tomorrow when I am not at work!

In 1994, it added another sparking page to its colorful history, when riders faced the worst conditions in years, some say more than 70 years. Thi… |
